Indie Slasher Film 'I Spill Your Guts' 2012 Review

I Spill Your Guts is the second film from writer/ director James Balsamo, Hack Job being his first film, and I have to say it is a big improvement in both writing and directing. James manages to get a bunch of cameos in his films and I Spill Your Guts is no exception. Being an intern at Troma for six years has given him access to their talent pool and you see many of them in this film. The slasher film also takes place in Troma’s backyard, NYC, also Balsamo’s hometown. New York City has always been a good place for a slasher film because the semi normal looking killer can walk the streets freely until he hits the news. After watching the film a couple of times here is my review for I Spill Your Guts.

Possible Spoilers From This Point On

Synopsis: Two friends Dennis and Joe join the military together. While on a routine mission, the two are quickly surrounded by enemy fire. When Joe stands up in the line of fire to run, Dennis pushes him out of the way and takes a bullet in the throat. Dennis wakes up in hospital to find Joe rewarded as a hero. Joe told a lie and took all the glory, and Dennis was left as a mute from the accident. Dennis can't talk, but actions speak louder than words. The two return home to N.Y. and now the war rages in the streets. Dennis wants revenge on Joe, so he will kill everyone close to him. One little lie will cost so many innocent lives.

As you can read from the synopsis, the main goal of Dennis is to take out everyone Joe knows and loves to make him hurt until he gets to Joe himself. Dennis seems to be like a killing machine that nothing can stop. From the moment Joe tells him about the lie and his discharge papers, Dennis is out to kill. He starts off by killing the doctor that is treating him, a security guard and a poor male nurse carrying a machete. From there he hops aboard the cargo plane taking Joe back home. Dennis is now on a mission to make Joe suffer and he does so by taking out everyone special in Joe’s life. The film ends with a battle between friends, a battle to the death.

The film has everything we have come to expect from a James Balsamo film. I Spill Your Guts has a ton of cameos from Troma regulars like Lloyd Kaufman, & Debbie Rochon, plus others like Andrew WK, Lynn Lowry, and DVD cover artist Jeff Zurnow.

Like most Troma films we are used to the crazy kills, nudity and humor. You can see that in James films as well. There is no doubt that his time at Troma rubbed off on him. James comes up with some cool ways of killing Dennis victims. Whether it is an over the top kill or a straight no frills kill, it is fun to watch.

James directing and writing has definitely come along since his first film Hack Job. The story for I spill Your Guts is more refined and the character development is much better. Even though Dennis is a killer you kind of feel for him and want him to get justice. The camera work has gotten better as well. The cuts are made more effective, the pacing of the film works and the camera work for the kills make you feel like you are right there thanks to the POV camera work.

One thing that I Spill Your Guts can boast, besides the kills, is the films soundtrack. There are so many bands on the soundtrack its crazy. We are talking about forty bands, like Suffocation, Cannibas Corpse and Ghoul to name a few. There is also a techno type of soundtrack that is used for cut scenes that I really dug.

The DVD artwork like I mentioned before was done Jeff Zurnow and man do I love his work. He has done covers for comics, bands and even the cool DVD company Arrow. The cover art showing the hooded killer and some of his female victims is awesome. The film is being released by Wide Eye Releasing and is available in major retail stores that sell DVD’s and the Acid Bath name and James Balsamo are developing quite a following. For an indie company that has not gone the crowd sourcing route, the company has been making films and will continue to make films and along with that new fans.

If you are a fan of Troma films then I would say I Spill Your Guts will be right up your alley. If you are a slasher film fan then give I Spill Your Guts a shot and if you are an indie horror film fan and want to support a company making films, growing a family of filmmakers, actors, musicians, then pick up a copy of I Spill Your Guts and let me know what you think.
